About this artwork
Christ With Shopping Bags is a symbol for Christmas consumerism. Christmas should be a celebration of the birth of Christ, instead it has been boiled down to spending a lot of money on food and gifts. It used to be a time to reflect about Christian values and spend time with loved ones, but people are obsessed with sales, creating a festive meal and buying the perfect gifts. The shopping bags are in striking contrast next to Jesus on the cross. The bags represent materialism, while Jesus is known for living a humble life. The bags are dripping blood, referencing the labour slavery that is behind many of the products we buy.
